WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly meeting oi the Waikouaiti County Council was held in the county office# at Waikouaiti yesterday. The following coun-cillors-were present-. Messrs Graham (chairman), J. Foote, C. Duke, Wm. Soiiter, A. S. Orbell, and J, Porteous. IXSrECTOII's UEI'OKT. The County Inspector (Mr Wm. Remlall) reported as follows:.—Concerning the application of Messrs Galbraitk re gravelling a. portion of the road leading to their property, there are about eight chains that gel very soil during wet weather, and to gravel this portion would require 80 yards, and I estiimito the cost at 18.— 'lenders to be exiled at next meeting. What is known as Thorburn's road requires some surfacing to put it in good order for summer Iritflic, but to improve it for winter requirements would necessitate about 400 yards o( gravel, costing about £'105.—Consideration deferred. The inspector was instructed to report upon the state of the road through section i, block IX, to which attention had been called by Messrs Gilmore tiros.; also to report on the flat part of the road leading from opposite Air Dodl's towards Mr C. ll'Doriald's property with a view to having some metal put 011 same. A circular from the Waimate County Clerk re converging traffic was received.—The council approved of the Waimate County Council s suggestion, and deoided to co-ouerate. A letter whs received from Messrs Sinclair and 'Warren requesting the council to lay off a road through Mr Warren's property.— Inspector to attend to tho matter. Mrs J. Leyden wrote requesting the council to open up a ditch 011 the boundary of her property.—Received; inspector to report. Tho Secretary of the Taieri Countv Council wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road 011 the boundary between the two counties. —Resolved that both county inspectors visit the locality complained of ou a day appointed, and agree upon the york necessarylto be done. Mr Jas. Chapman wrote requesting the council to expend part of his land fund 011 the rant from his homestead towards the Waihemo CoUnty.—Received; inspector to report at next meeting. Mr John Wetberstone and seven others wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road from 31r Walter Park's property to the AVaitatiWakari road.—lt was decided to call for tenders for tlio work, Mr M. Dillon and 10 others wrote requesting the council to gravel William street, Mansfordtown.—The inspector to attend to the work. A letter from the Waihemo County Clerk re credit of Mr Geo. ltoas's small grazing run was received. Tho Secretary of the Karitane Domain Board wrote concerning money due to the board by tho county couucil.-It was resolved that the account be paid. . The Commissioner of Taxes wrote that he had sent to the Treasury a voucher for £125, being balance of subsidy.—Received. Mr Win. Jennings and five others petitioned the council to repair the lower part of Murdering Beach road.—Tho request to be complied with, and the petition to be sent to Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R. Formal letters were received from the ActingPremier ro the proposed new dock, and from the secretary of the Land Board re gravel reserve. 'HSASCIAL. A communication was received from the Controller and Auditor-general stating that he had certified to the correctness of the balance sheet for the year ending March 31, 1902.—The balance sheet was approved, and tho chairman authorised to sign it, while tho clerk was instructed to have it published in the Daily limes. Tho Finance Committoe roporled having examined tho accounts for the month. of Au-'uat amounting to £330 is Bd, and recommended same for payment.—Carried. Tho tender of W. Kerr for 20 yards rotten rock for Chisholm's road. Hawksbury Riding, for £3 12s, was accepted. A SPECIAL REPORT. Cr® Orbell and Souter reported as follows on Stenhouse and Dempster's roads: —Stennouse road: We found this road 'in very fair order. About 8 or 10 chains would be improved by gravelling, and some of the wall abutting.the river requires repacking,- We recommend that this work should be done. On behalf of the council, we granted Mr- Douglas permission to straighten the river wliero necessary, and exonerated him from all damage that might occur to tho road by doing so. Dempster's road is in need of repair, and we recommend that the inspector furnish a detailed report as to probable cost, requirements, etc. It was resolved' that the inspector be asked to supply the information required as to. cost of repairs to road connecting Puddy's road and M'Aulay's road; particular attention to be paid to.those parts on which soparate contracts were to bo let. It was further resolved that—" This council approves o' y tho action taken and the report furnished by Cis Orbell and Souter." ÜBirane iianspobbtown. Cr Poote reported that at .the request of a number of ratepayers be had interviewed the clerk and inspector of works of tho-Port Chalmers Town Council, and from information supplied by them ho had arrived at the conclusion that to renovate and equip the four lamps,, as requested by the Hansford residents, would cost £10, and the oil and .attention, etc., 11a per month, for maintenance! As the council bad tho necessary information, at .its disposal, lis would respectfully-recommend the council to bear half the cost of putting lamps in readiness for next winter, and also boar the cost of lighting the same. Tho season being so far advanced it was not worth while to do anything in tho meantime.—Adopted. GE.ST.RAL. On the motion of Cr Duke, seconded by Cr Port<ou3, .the resolution passed at last meeting of council levying a general rate of Jd in' the. pound for the year ending March 31, 1903, was confirmed, and tho chairman and Cr Orbell wore authorised to sign tho rate book. It was decided to call'tenders uor forming about -u chaijiß of road through the Mount Cnrgill estate, commencing at end of present formation to Morton's Creek, leading towards Jacks.. Cr Orbell stated that he had raised about 100 bags of poisoned grain' for small , birds, and ho thought it Was proving effective in destroying them, and he wished to know if the council required ir.ore.-It was decided that Cr Orbell should prepare a further quautitv of 100 bags. Cr Orbell drew attention to the almost impassable state of "portion of the Seacliff--1 uketeraki road. Cr Porteous and others also urged tho necessity for having the work done •without further delay.—After considerable discussion it was resolved, on tho motion of Cr Porteous, seconded by Cr Orbell-" That the inspector be authorised to have the worst places repaired, either with manuka fascines, stone, or in any other effective way, as, soon as possiblo." It was moved by Cr Poote and seconded by Cr Duko 1 That this council desire to express their appreciation of the services of the member for Waikouaiti (Mr E. G.
