WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

At the monthly meeting of the Borough Council, held on Monday last, it was deckled lo call for 10 years' lease of municipal endowments in East Hawksbury; also that legal proceedings be taken against those perrons who. persist in allowing their cattle to wander on the streets and footpaths after being warndd. At a special meeting following a resolution, to set as a special order, was passed declaring that gorse and broom are noxious weeds within the jurisdiction of the Hawksbnrv Baroiu>h Council within the meaning of " The Xu*iotis Weeds Act, 1900." On the same night Dr King, ot Scac'.iff Asylum, gave a most interesting and instructive address on '•Arboriculture" in the Mechanics' Hall, before a large audience, the lecture being given in response to an invitation fromthc Public School Arbor Day Committee. The Doctor gave some information re the planting of marram grass, lupin, etc., on the sandhills at Kuritane, saving that'flic work hart been a great success, and that the planting bad transformed the appearance of the itshmus in a. short time. He also made some practical remarks ttbout tree-planting, remarking tbat he did not favour the exlrcmc of planting all foreign trees, nor, on the other hand, all native ones, but thcuehl people should avail themselves of whatever was most beautiful from any available source. Willi judicious planting he saw no reason why AVaikcuaiti should not be made one of the prettiest health resorts along the coast, and he was pleased to learn that. Mr Stewart was about lo interest the school children in arboriculture. The Eev. C. A. Fraer, after expressing pleasure in listening to tho doctor's remarks, related how the present movement had originated with, some members of the school committee, and that Dr King had kindly promised to give them some marram grass and seeds as a start. Ho moved-" (1) That a District Improvement Society be formed; (2) that the members consist of the Major and two councillors, the chairman and members of the Domain Beard, and the School Arbor Dp.;- Committee." Mr Hunter seconded the motions with some appropriate remarks, and they were carried amid?t applause. On the motion of Mr Stewart, a hearty vote of thanks was then accorded to Dr King, those present warmly applauding, and the meeting then concluded. The Mayor presided at a meeting, held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday night, to make arrangements for ilie proper celebration cf the King's Coronation. It was decided to observe the event on. Monday, I.lth August, the religious services to be held on the day preceding. A' procession will leave the cchoolgronnd at neon for the beach, where «. monster picnic will be held and marram grass planted on (he sandhills. At night there will be a torchlight procession, bomircs, and fireworks, followed by a free social in the Public Hall and a dance.
