The British merchants are delighted that Chang Ohituiig has been appointed High Commissioner of Trade in China, and that he is to retain his present viceroyalty. (Received July 31, at 10.10 a.m.) The Marquis of Lansdowne presided at a conference held in the Foreign Office. Many Lancashire and London merchants fere present to discuss the new Chinee treaty.
_ WASHINGTON, July 31. (Received August 1, at 0.45 a.m.) Dr t'aiiright, an American missionary in Szeehunn, declares that repeated missionary appeals to the authorities for protection have been fruitless. Tho inasracres of converts and the destruction of property continue daily. Missionaries arc in imminent danger.
