PORT CHALMERS ENDOWMENT (DUNBACK)
TO THE KDITO*. Sir,—Ratepayers are writing about the reduotion of rent given to Mr E. G. Allen, the lessee of this land; and no wonder. Had the councillors never seen the place there might be some oxcuso for them, but 1 understand they paid a visit on purpose to inspect the land accompanied by a hardheaded Scotchmnn as valuator, "who told me jiimself—ho has since passed to his long home—that the land was worth more than wits being paid, and ho reported accordingly. At the fame time, he eaid Mr Allen hail told 'him'he would get a reduction, no matter', .what his report might be. Into tlio legality of the matter, of course, I cannot enter, but it is a great pity if things-liko this can be done without tlio offenders'.being brought lo book. I myself, Sir, would gladly take tlio place to-morrow at tlio original rent of Is per acre, and were it put to auction, I dare to say it would bring more. My name sho'uld bo a sufficient guarantee of my,bona fides.—l am, etc.,
l am, etc., UimUack", July 28. Sheep-farmeie. . i
