A statement was made at the reunion of tlie New Zealand Dairy Association employees yesterday at Ngaiuaivahia (hat anthrax arose from feeding on turnip?, for which crop bonedust was the manure chiefly used. News was received from Pukekohn. to-day «f the sudden death of Mr Jacob H. Wright, a well-known settler. Mr Wright had been for some. yr-iir- a member of the Auckland Hoard of Education, and was prominently connected with the Tanncm' Union.
' ' NAPIER, July 30. An outbreak of fire occurred this afternoon in a. storeroom at- (.lie rem- of the premises of Mr A. .T. Williams.' chemist. A tin of phosphorus had iorroded, and the contents leaked out, and after .smouldering for a long time burst into flame. The tire brigade succeeded in confining the fire to Iho storeroom, but not before.'damage to the extent of £400 had been done to iho stock. The situation of the building is right in the centre of Hustings street', and it is fortunate the lire was prevented from spreading.

The stipendiary magistrate gave judgment for defendants to-doy in a caso in which the assignee sousrlit to rocover £30 from the Canterbury Fanners' Co-operative Association, being money retained by them as part payment for a crop of' tiirn'iiw which (hoy sold for a Waitohi farmer who owed them £.1400 and subsequently became bankrupt. Counsel for tiie assignee contended as the £50 was not earned till after the bankruptcy (tho turnips having to be eaten olf before it was earned), the defendant association was not entitled to tho money to tho exclusion of other creditors, 'flip magistrate held that the money was earned from the date of the, original agreement, which was beforo the bankruptcy. - OAMARU. July 30. The death is recorded within a few hours of an old married couple who were amongst the early settlers, of Oamaru. Mr James Woonton died on Monday night (aged 3'l). and his wife died early this morning (aged 70).
