A BY-ELECTION.
[ A GOVERNMENT DEFEAT. Bress Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 30. (Received July 30, at 11.6 p.m.) The election for Leeds North, caused through tho Right Hon. W. L. Jackson (C) being raised to the peerage, resulted in tho return of Mr Rowland Barran (L) by 7539 votes. Sir Arthur Lawson (0) polled 6781. The figures produced a great sensatipn in Parliament. Tho defeat Of the Government candidate is mainly, attributed to the Education Bill and the inadequate public control of schools, also forcing it by all-night sittings. Electioneering placards contrasted the big Liberal with the little Protectionist loaf, although tho price of bread is ' practically unaffected by the recent corn duties.
[At Hl6 general election the polling was: W. L. JiK'kso.i (C.), 7512; J. 0. Hamilton (L.), 4-SS5.]
