PRESENTATION BY HARRIERS

A most enthusiastic gathering of over 50 harriers assembled last evening in the club house to do honour to Mr R. 3. Jackson, who has lately joined the ranks of tho benedicts. Apologies were received from thij Rev. W. Itewitson, Messrs J. 11. GaHorcay, and W. Bennett, sen. Mr Wm. L. Hooper presided, and warmly eulogised Mr' Jackson's good work in furthering the interests of harriensm in our city. There was no possible doubt but that their friend was the originator of the sport here, lie had also been a strong committeeman, and in the life of the club was always ready -with his counsel and advice to young runners. He had had experience both iu tho Old Country and Australia, and on that account alono lie was a very.valuable man to have as an official. In conclusion he asked Mr Jackson's acceptance of a gold albert and a piece of silverware for Mts Jackson. These wero the outcome of a. united effort amongst the harriers in Duncdin to show the good reeling which existed towards their guest.—(Applause.) Several prominent- members of tho club also spoke in high terms ot Mr Jackson's, many good qualities, and their remarks were received witli unmistakable expressions of approval by those present, iir Jackson, in replying, referred to his long connection with tile sport, and how it had benefited him in tnany ways. He would always feel that he personally owed a debt of gratitude to harriers, and anything lie could do to repay that debt was only reasonable. He felt .that he did not deserve what had been said about hint, but he thanked them ail for their kind expressions of goodwill and also for.the handsome gifts.—(Applause.) During the evening the following toasts were duly honoured: — "Tho King," "Our Guest," and "Kindred Sports." A musical programme was also carried out. Songs were given by iir Wilhelmsoii, H. Murray, aud A. Lothian. Recitations by P. Israel and M. Johnson, and a. clarionet solo by G. Morton, Each item was received with favour, and the performers were heartily applauded. A challenge cup, presented by Mr \Y. L. Hooper at the beginning of the season foi- competition amongst amateurs generally, was on view, and the treasurer of the Dunedin Harriers took the opportunity of receiving it on behalf ol the club, and of thanking the donor for his handsome gift. Supper was dispensed in excellent style by Host Fca, and tho usual vote of thanks to the chair and . to Mr Cooper for acting 03 accompanist con- ; eluded a very enjoyable evening.
