NEW MUSIC
We have received from Messrs C-has. Bsgg and Co. a song of thanksgiving, " Peace," by W. E. Goodwins, a composer who has previously scored some successes in London. The-song now under notice has been sung with success by Mr Harrison Brockbanlt. The sentiment is all that could be desired, hut the verses are somewhat halting. This defect is overshadowed by the exccllence of the composition, and as tlie music is stirring, aiid presents no serious difficulty, the song is likely- to please. We have to acknowledge receipt of the." Cosy Dell SclipWisclie," by B. A. do Lautour, of Dunedin. This piece should become n favourite with dancers. It presents 110 serious difficulties, the time-is well marked, and there are several novelties-which are pleasing to the ear. The price is very reasouable, and the lithographic work of Messrs Wilkic and Co. is excellent.
Probably no firm in the colonies has done more to foster colonial music than Messrs W, H. Palling and, Co., of Sydney, Brisbane, and Newcastle, who appear always ready to bring before the Australian 'public compositions n f merit. AVe have received two of their most recent published pieces. The first is tho " Transvaal Schottische," by Chas. C. W. Waitings, dedicated to Misa Kathleen Fitzgerald. This piece _is by no means so easy as the schottische just noticed, but the time is good, and- there is a distinct novelty about- the composition which is likely to meet with public approval. The "Coronet Waltz," by Miss Maud Fitz Stubbs, dedicated to his Majesty tho' King, is distinctly pretty, and certainly above the average. Some of the effects recall the same young lady's 1 Empire Waltz," published last Christmas, but that will not be considered a fault, but rather a merit, Altogether the " Coronet Waltz" is a meritorious production.
