A NEW FLARE LIGHT.

j A new kind of patent flare light, called" the " Luenl Light," for use while working at night, is being exploited on the market | by Messrs Xeill and Co. (ihe locai agents), . and a trial took place in tho railway goods • yard last evening for the purpose of (t£monstrating its value. There was a fair attendance of gentlemen interested in such things, amongst them being Mr Rogers (city engineer), Mr Shepherd ' (Messrs Noyes Bros.' representative}, Captain Strang (U.S.S. Company), and Mr F. W. Mac Lean (district engineer for railways). His Worship the Mayor and some of the city coun- , cillors also intended to bo present, but were ' prevented on account of the meeting of the Otago Central Railway League. The invention comprises two circular tanks, the outer one of which contains oil and the inner one water. The principle of the light is that the water, which is boated to boi'ling point, is run through toils, and the steam issues from a jet in the centre of tho bead and draws with- it the oil for consumption. A pump is connected with the inner tank in order to obtain a pressure of air to forco the water into the burner. While the light is held to bo as good as that obtained by the lise of-any other patent, it is claimed that by tho adoption of the " Lueal" system the consumption of oil is reduced by 25 per ccnt. At the commencement of tho trial the light burned' excellently, and threw a bright reflection all round, but owing to an omission to charge the outer tank with a I sufficiency of oil the experiment did not on tho whole turn out so successful as would have othenviso been the ca/e. Under the circumstances', ' however, the test could not bo considered a. fair one, and another trial will take place'shortly, when, no doubt, the patent will be exhibited under more favourable conditions and seen to better advan--1 tage. Those present expressed themselves as pleased with the quality of the light.
