DRAUGHTS. MATCH.

GARDINER v. BRODIE.

Play in the draughts match between Gardiner and Brodte was continued yesterday morniug at 9.30. The three sittings only produced three games, hut these were of a speciallv interesting character. Brodie won the game played in the morning', and the other two [-ames were drawn, making the score:—Brodie, 3Gardiner, 2; dmra, 9; II) to play. Eollowky are details of the ploy: — Twelfth Game.—When Gardiner with the Black sido opened the second ''Fife" game— Bnxlie's nomination-both players manifested great caution, especially after Brodie, early in the game, took a lite of play not generally adopted. The game opened thus ,—llls, 23 19 0 14, 22 17, 5 9, 26 23, 9 13, »2J 20, alter which both players were repeatedly cailed to time. For two hours itho gamo progressed slowly, when it became evident that Gardiner was in a hopeless position, and although ho struggled manfully on, not a ehanco was given, and the game ended tlmo:—Bhick (Gardiner) on 4, 21), 2), kings 0, 29; White on 7, 27, 30, Icings IG, 22. Play proceeded:—l ß,7 3,8 12,16 19. G 10,27 23 10 6, 3 7,6 9, 7 10,9 5,123 18, 5 0,18 15, 9 5,10 G, and Gardiner resigned. Time, 2hr 40miu. Thirteenth Game.—Thio brought Gardiner's fenrth nomination, for which ho selected the " Centre," which is formed by the moves 11 15, 23 19, 8 11, 22 17, 15 18; then Brodie went 19 15, and thenceforward each player exercised great caution. After half an hour's'ploy Gardiner seemed to have a romowhat weak position, but he cleared his lines by a neat stroke, which removed, eight pieces, and loft him with tin advantage in position. Then a long, wearying struggle began, Gardiner striving for a win by holding two of bin opponent's men in a single corner with ;v king. With four king's in play against two kings and two single men, the game continued until 5.30, when Brcdie got the chance of two for two, and placed the draw beyond doubt. The general opinion among the experts is that Gardiner should hxvo won, but after playing hard for some three hours, it is no wonder if he missed it in n difficult position. Time, 3hr ullmin.

Fourteenth Cfr.nie.—For the even'ing sittiiip pamc the accowl " Centre," Brotl-e bavin* the Black sid». The game opened hlnng the sttmc in* as the preceding one, and then kept along familiar paths, a neat <lra\v resulting. Near the end a tivo-for-tw.) lctt the following position: — Bhiok men on 5, 7. 17, 2D; White inen on S, 20, 2S, 31. Black had to play, and a few moves only wen made. Play will be continued this morning at 3.30.
