Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 23. (Received July 24, at 9.49 a.m.) The match between the Australians and Surrey was resumed in dull weather. The wicket was rather soft, but easy, and the attendance moderate. Hill accompanied Armstrong, the not-out man, to the wickets. The latter carried his score to 21, when he was caught by Richardson at mid-on. Four for 190. Noble followed Hill, and added a single, but immediately after the newcomer was given out leg before to Lees. Five for 197. Gregory succeeded, but was caught off his first ball easily in the slips by Hayes, the total remaining unaltered. Darling joined Hill, and the two South Australian left-handers gave a splendid exhibition of free, hard' hitting. The partnership lasted 55 minutes, and added 9u runs. Darling eventually succumbed to a fast one from Richardson. Seven for 287. Hill had made 76. Hopkins was the next man, and 300 appeared on the board at the end of 190 minutes' play. Hopkins was caught arcer compiling G. Eight for 3013. With Howell as partner Hill added a single before being called upon to retire leg before. He had played vigorous and determined cricket for his 90 runs. Nino for 313. Saunders, the last man in. was promptly caught by Gower before he had a chance to score.
Surrey commenced their second innings after the luncheon adjournment, Abel and Hayward opening. AM totted up 5, when he was finely caught by Howell low down, left-handed, off his own bowling. One for 5. Hayes was next, and play became fast until he played one of Noble's into Armstrong's hands at slip. He made 19 of his 22 olf two overs. Two for 43. Hayward, after ft fine, chance-less innings for 48, was, caught by Hill off Armstrong. Three' for 05. Jephson joined Lockwood only to see the latter succumb to an easy catch by Darling at mid-off. Four for i $>5. Further disaster followed. Gowev, ''■ who came nest, was caught by Noble without alteration of the score. Brockwell partnered Jephson, who, when he had made 7, played Saunders into Armstrong's hands. Six for 108. (Received July 24, at 10.5 p.m.) Surrey's second innings' realised; only In. The' Australians lost one! wicket for 11 runs.. The match was drawn. |
Lees joined Brockwell only to return caught by Duff without breaking his duck. Seven for 108. The wicket had now become very dimcult. Clcde added 3, and then lost. Brockwell, who was stumped by Carter.' Eight for 111. The remaining wickets fell without any addition to the score, Clcde being caught at mid-on and Richardson at mid-off°by Skyors, both by Duff, off Saunders, who took the last four wickets without a run being scored off him. As there was no chance of finishing the match the Australians sent the tail in. Howell and Saunders put together 8, when the partnership was ■ended by "owell skying one from Clotle to Gower at third-man. Armstrong assisted Saunders in playing out time.
