The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended June 30, which have hec-u compiled by the secretary of the Education Board, show hat there wero 217 schools i operation ,„ the district, employing 189 male a 335 female eachers. ' Tho attendances at Oamaru were:-, South School, 376; North, 316; Middle, 235. At the Dutriet High Schools :- Port, Chalmers, 424; Atosgiel, 267- Balelutha, 260; Lawrence, 255: Tokomairirn, 219; Palmei'ston 202; Nnsoby, 177; Tapanui, 172; Hampden, 139. During the.quarter the Kaikorai School wp reopened, and new schools at Horse Plat and Tapui wero opened.
