There were 160 brethren present, including 44 Past Masters, Grand Master Bro. H. J. Williams, and Grand Secretary Bro. Tho Public Health Department- to-day prosecuted a suburban doctor and a resilient for failure to report a caso of infectious disease—viz., scarlet fever. The action was taken to impress on medical men and householders that all diseases of infectious character must, be , reported. Defendants (Were fined a nominal amount, i Mr Campbell, for 23 years chief engineer of the Government steamers, is retiring from the service. CHPvISTCHURCH, July 11. A six-roomed house at Woolston, owned and occupied by Mr Cockbum, was destroyed by fire last night. Insurances: Building, £200 in the London and Liverpool and Globe office;. furniture and piano, about £140 in the Imperial office. PALMERSTON NORTH, July 11. The Canterbury A, and P. Association have intimated to the Manawatu A. and P. Association that tlicy cannot alter the dates of tho next annual show,, which clash with the Manawatu fixture. The Special Committee appointed have recommended the Borough .Council to invite alternative competitive designs for the erection of a Town Hall containing municipal offices, public library, and a hall with seating accommodation for 1500, or an Opera House only, to seat the same number. Applications for debentures for £6000, allotted for the purpose, are to lie invited in Wellington, Napier, Wanganui, and Palmerston North.
