MUNICIPAL HIBERNATION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir.,—l am not, I hope, a growler; in fact, I am inclined to make tho best of things; but patience has a limit,, and I think the treatment that the council compels its burgesses to oubmit to when they have to travel in tho cars ■ is little less than an outrage. They are crowded to excess in defiance r.f all by-laws; they are dirty in the extreme; their wheels are any shape but round-, and the roadway is out of repair. Nov/, it will be a year before we can dispenso with t|m present system, and I contend that it m the plain duty of the corporation to provido decent comfort for passengers, even if they diminish their profits. Any up-to-dato proprietary would do it, and tlicro is no reason why the council should not have - a interval when dealing with' tramway matters. / But I am not yet done. Why should the City Council strive to make us known as Dirty Dunedin? All show week the pavements and streets were simply awful. Tho council know perfeot-ly well that tho city was full of strangers and country visitors, and yet they apparently grudged the necessary outlay for a fow daymen with brooms, who could have swept- the pavements in the early morning and tho crowings through the day. As" it was, the city was simply in a disgusting stato, arid .the councillors of-a/ little town like Milton would have blushed for shame had they seen their streets in a similar neglected condition. As a taxpayer, I expect the Mayor (who is a tolerably well-paid official when tilers nas been no contest) and the City Councillors to take the same interest in tho streets' of the city that they are compelled by law' to take in their back-yards. Wo will 'to content- with a clean,.city, and the next generation can arrange for a Utopia—l am, etc., Bfkgess.
