I A DEFENCE LAUNCH IN DISTRESS.

CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. _. .The Rotomaliana, with the Ellen Ballance in-tow, reached Lyttelton at 8.15 p.m. Sim sighted the launch at 2.30 a.m. about 12miles oft Kaikoura. A strong sou'-west gale was blowing; with a heavy sea, and the launch was in serious difficulties, and making tignala of distress. Tho Rotoinahana stoodby, and succeeded in getting a rope to the launch about 4.20. She then'towed her to Kaikoura, which was readied at 10.15. Here a wire, hawser was substituted for tho rope, and the tow continued to Lyttelton. The launch had lost her compass. The launch Nilo was seen some miles, farther out when the Ellen Ballance was pickcd up, and seemed all right. She put into Kaikoura at 4 p.m. The Rotomahana left on her interrupted journey about 10 o'clock. f WELLINGTON, July 2. The defence steamer Nile is reported to be sheltering at Kaikoura.

Napier,-after undergoing an overhaul on the slip at Port Chalmers was towed up •-yesterday and hud her boiler ehipped, the latter meanwhile having been repaired and tested to 1201b pressure at Mr Joseph , Sparrow's foundry. The Napier will lie got ready for sea with-all-despatch, and when the necessary alterations are finished Mr Sullivan- iutends placing her in the fishing trade as a trawler iri addition to the present trawler, the s.s. Express. The barque Santa Chiara is making satisfactory progress with tho discharge of her cargo of roofing tiles, and it ,is expected she wdl finish this week. / The s.s. Port' Chalmers yesterday morning, and left in the afternoon for the West Coast. The s.s. Invercargill left for Invercargill yesterday afternoon. ' . The U.S.S. Hodges, she was granted pratique. The Mokoia left Melbourne at 5 p.m. of the 25th June, had fair weather and reached Hobart at 3.30 a.m. on the 27th : lilt.
