THE DIRECT STEAMERS.

The Otarama, and Tokomaru sailed from "Wellington for London on Saturday. The Tokomaru afterwards put hack owing to stress of weather.

The s.s. Talune was berthed at the cross wharf at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. She leaves for Melbourne to-day. The s.s. Upolu, with cargo from New Plymouth and northern ports, arrived at 11 a.m. yesterday, and was berthed at the Rattray street wharf.

The £.?. Invercargill. v.itli a cargo of timber from Stewart J?land, arrived yesterday afternoon, and -was berthed at the" Kattray street wharf.

As an instance ot the greater facilities for chipping heavy lifts now provided by the Otago Harbour Board, we may mention that the s.s. Waihora took in, direct from the railway trucks at tlie deep-water berfh, Lower Jetty street wharf, an Bin gun and mountings, weighing 13 tons, in one lift of the big crane. The gun is for the Wellington fortifications, we understand.

The s.s. Taluno, from Sydney, via fool; Strait, arrived at Port Chalmers at 9 a.m. yesterday, and steamed up to Duncdin. She left Sydney at 0.10 p.m. of the 21st inst., had a strong southerly gale with heavy peas and hard squalls, and arrived at Wellington on the 26th inst.: left again at 6.15 p.m. of the 27th inst., and reached iiyttelton at 10.30 a.m. of the 28th inst.: left again at 5 p.m. fame day, and reached headquarters as above.

The s.s. Tarawera left tlie Bowen pier, Port Chalmers, 011 Saturday afternoon for Auckland, via the East Coast ports. The s.s. Mamari has put out about 600 tons of cargo at the George ttreet pier, Chalmers.

H.M.S. Terrible, Captain Percy M. Scott, C.8., took in 2500 tons of coal at Hongkong on April 24, thus' establishing a record [or coaling operation?.

Tho biggest shearing* in the world have recently been orcctod in ILM. dockyard at Portsmouth, at a cost o[ £60.000. They are 160 ft high, and arc tested to lift 100 tons, but, arc capable of lilting 200 tons. The s.s. Elingamito, from Sydney, via tho north, reached Dimedin yesterday. She loft Sydney nn the 18th inst., and reached Auckland on the 23rd, leaving for the south on the following day. She railed at Gisbome, Napier, Wellington, and Lyttelton. •She experienced fine weather and smooth sea* to Auckland, strong northerly gale with high sea? to Gisbornc, tine weather to Wellington, moderate southerly !;alo with heavy head sea to Lyttelton, thence fine weather to arrival.

The following are the shipping statistics for the past week:—-Arrivalr—Santa Chiara, barque, 659 tons; Invcrc.irgill, s.s., 123; Tutanekai, s.s., 412; Mamari, ,s.s„ 3533; Wcstralia, s.s.. 1819; Tarawera, s.s., 1?63; Upolu, 5.?., 700;' Talune, s.s., 1370; Elingamite, s.s., 1675 : I'arcora, s.s., 463: Invcrenrgill, s.s., 125; Sarah and Mary, schooner, 145;— total, "12,320 tons. Complaints are frequently made as to tlio confusion caused by., vc&eli lmving the same name. As illustrating this it may bo mentioned that thcro arc two sailing vessels, both German barques, on their way to Melbourne, and each bears the. name of Anna. To still further complicate matters, there is at the present lime in port nt Melbourne a steamer named Anna. Tho last-menlioited craft is under the Norwegian flag, and has just boon chartered to convey a cargo of coal from Newcastle to Manila.

The Montebdlo, a French barque bound from Cardiff to Honolulu, unexpectedly put in her appearance at Sydney on the 16th inst. She left- Cardiff on 1 March 16, and when abreast of Capo Louwin on May 20 sprang a leak. Tho water, which made its way into the forepcak at the rate of oft of 4ft a day, was easily kept in cheek by the pumps, and tho cargo was not damaged in any way.. The captain, however, deemed it advkiblo to call at Sydney to communicate'with his owners by cable.
