(Received May 2!), at 9.2!) a.m.) Mi' Barton, in an address to his constituents, regretted bis inability to visit them before his departure for London. Replying to attacks made for not clearly indicating the attitude ho intends to take at the Imperial Conference lie said that to enter a conference irrevocably pledged (o a. certain attitude is bound to ensure failure. While recognising to the full the legitimate responsibilities involved in their connection with thfi Empire, he would enter into no engagements or subscribe to any agreements which would sacrifice the interest and hamper the development of the Commonwealth.
