SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
— MORN'INGTON. The newly-elected committee met at the close of the meeting of householders,. and Appointed the following officers .'—Chairman, Mr J. H, Ford; secretary, Mr S. LEITH VALLEY. At- the meeting of householders the following were elected:--Messrs M. Fimiertv, J. Booth, TI. Harbour, W. Harbour," ft! Stoors, f». Butler, ancMV. Hoiulerson. Mr JH, Harboui' was (appointed'chairman,' and Mr Henderson secretary. The report 6f the retiring eommittec stated tli.it the attendance for the past four quarters had been 63. 54, 54, and 62. Under Mr Bottiu" and Miss- Lov; the school had progressed. 0 very satisfactorily. At a co?t of over £10 the committee had erected a new fence. 'As the result of an application to tlie Education Board, the addition of two' rooms to the master's residence were now prqcced- '"?• school contributed its quota of children to the demonstration in honour of tho_ royal visit. Two coiich-ts wcro.' held during the year, and thanks? were accorded to, Messrs Williams and Waldio and to; Mr Atmes for a gift of £1. The annual picnic was held on' February 21,-. and -proved: a greati success. The committee were able to report a credit- balance of £7 15s 4d in the bank ana £113s in hand. M'lntosh being in tho chair. : The annual report was taken as read. The balance sheet was received, and after the Itcvs. Will and Ginger-had spoken in laudator)' terms of the highly satisfactory work done by the rector and staff during the year and the attention given to tho school affairs by the outgoing committee,' the report and balance sheet were adopted. Tlie following were elected a committee ensuing year without opposition: —Messrs n "j:- Arbuolde, A. Blair, A. li. Ilafett, G. Jeff cry, D. M'lntosh, J. Nome, P., Uren, and D. "\Valker. A motion was unanimously carried—." That it be recorded oil' the minutes the gratification felt by the householders, at the very successful results of the work of the rector and staff as disclosed in the annual report, and that they be congratulated thereupon." ■ A meeting of the newly-electcd eommil'lee was held immediately after the public meeting, when Mr D. M'lntosh was elected chairman and. Mr G. Jcffery 'clerk for the ensuing year. The annual report stated that the attendance during the year' had been steadily kept up. Ten candidates sat for the junior civil service examination, and all passed, one gaining .-fifth position cu the list nivd one twenty-eighth. Two sat for the senior examination and eccured a partial pas.s. '.One boy gained three years' free education. rFive gained appointments." as pupil teachers. Seven pupils were, attpointed as cadets iu the civil service durltig the year. Typewriting, shorthand, and wood-carving 'aro taught as technical subjects. The cadet corps holds its own, and gained the maximum grant of £20.; Commencing tlie year with a debit balance of £4- 12a sd, tho Comrnitleo closed it with a debit balance o"{ £1 8s Bd.

A resolution passed objccling to the proposed centrajlisation at Wellington. WAITAHUNA.—The meeting of householders for the ensuing year was well attended. There were, eight nominations, but one of the number withdrawing; there-was no contest; Mr John Cowan presided, and declared Messrs M'Caw, M'Ara, Ellis,' Toner. Eaker. Ficldsoth, and the Rev. j. S. Reid elected the committee for the year. ,At a subsequent meciting of- the committee Mr R. M'Caw was appointed chairman and Mr R. M'Ara secretary and treasurer. WAITAHUNA GULLY.—Messrs Ferris, Hansen, Wightman, Kirby, Cdrmody, Lutjen, amVHagen wore elected. Mr J'. Ferris was, elected chairman and Mr (i. J. Hansen secretary and treasurer of the new committee. At the annual meeting the need of a sewing mistress was discussed. It was felt that when so much is made of manual instruction, ii ; is a pity that that Very necessary knowledge—sewing—should lw entirely neglected, or, that to obtain it. the discipline and influence of a man should have to be put aside. A .resolution was passed that the Education Board shold strive to influence the Education Department in doing justice to the girls of the smaller schools. WAIKOUAITI.—The annual meeting of householders of this district was. attended by close on 50 persons. The report stated that 32, new pupils were admitted during the yoar and 34 left, tho_ numb;r on the roll noiv being 169, with an'average altetulanco of 149, which is not }wd considering the exceptionally wet season experienced. Under the new scheme of 'staffing, the school had become entitled to a second assistant, and with the exception of the mistross all the ■present teachers had been appointed since the outgoing committee look office. The whole of the intorior of. tlio master's residence had been renovated; the old, residence also rc-roofed with iron and otherwise repaired; the sanitary condition of the school .had been carefully attended to and a swimming class for the boys inaugurated under the supervision of the roaster and Mr Kerr. Tlie balance sheet showed the total receipts, for the year to be £53 5s 2d, and the expenditure £48 7s Bd, leaving a credit balance of £4 17s 6d. The Chairman (Mr T. Smith) moved the adoption of the report ami balance sheets This was seconded by Mr Davis, and carried unanimously after some slight discussion. At Xormaiiby (Hawera) there wos a lively meeting., of • householders to elect, a school committee, ;Tho mutter of the recent dismissal and reinstatement of the head master ivas brough't.up by a reference in the annual report,".which asserted that the decision of tliii.Teaehers ! Court of Appeal was not satisfactory to the Education Board, the committee, or the: teacher. Later on Mr Clartson was as)»ed to product the inspector's report for last year, but he declined to do so, as lie was instructed that the meeting had parsed a resolution condemning the decision of the Court of Appeal to reinstate Mr Clark-iQli, aiul endorsing the action of the Education Board.
At a, meeting of the Kauaeranga (Thames) School Committee a discussion 011 the Bible-reading in schools question ended -in the following resolution being agreed to with one dissentient:—"That inasmuch as the question of Bible-reading in schools lias never been submitted to the people of this colony,-ifiis- meeting l of householders of the Kaiiaeranga school district of the Thames respectfully ask the Government to grant a referendum 011 the subject during the next session of Parliament,"
