AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF
(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 10. A meeting of the Council of tho Chamber 0! Commerce was held to-day. Tho London Chamber of Cominprce wrote expressing pleasuro that the Auckland Chamber was in. favour of the iiitroiluo'ion of the metric system. ThoHnmo Chamber suggested that the Auckland Chamber should endeavour to form a Decimal Association with tho view of the education of public opinion. It was agreed to send a copy of tlm letter to tho Premier, the Minister of Education, and the principal Chambers of Commerca in the colony. The secretary brought under notice the proposals made by the representative of the Oceanic Steamship Company to the Commonwealth Ooverament re the San Francisco service. Tho chairman said the proposal was evidently nart and parcel of an American endeavour to capture the trade of the Pacific. He thought the people of those colonics should bn very chary of their action in thn matter. Mr Aicken said they would alipnr'o the sympathy of tho whole colony if they were too grasping. Mr Tewsley thought one thing the colonies conltl njjt assimilate was thn fact that tho snipping laws of America, barred British boats. Of course, if there was no restriction the Union Company, or any other company, could also run stoamwa, and thon it would he fair enough. After some further discussion, it was deoid»d that the time was premature for takini; aotion, and that the course of events should be watched before doins anything. On tho motion of the chairman,.it resolved to write to the Council of the 'underwriters' Association, which meets shortly, and aek for a reconsideration of the question of reducing firo insurance rates.
