■ ■■ •+• The employees »f Messrs Sargood, Son, ami Ewen last week presented' Mr Peter Smeaton, who is leaving Ike firm, with a handsome oil painting from the brush of Mr Greene, of Xiniani, and also full sets of Sir Walter Scott's and Charles Dickens's novels as a mark ot their esteem. In making the presentation, Mr J. Kcill Barclay referred to the many good qualities exercised by Mr Smeaton during his long career with the firm, and the great regret expressed by alt that his health had caused him to take the step he had. At the same time lie tiusted that in the quietness of his home the recipient might be spared to enjoy many years of good health in the future. In thanking his fellow employees for their handsome present, Mr Smeaton said he was sorry that he had been compelled to take the step he had, for he felt it extremely hard to sever old friendships and associations of S3 years' standing, hut lie had the matter of Ms health to consider, and thnt was his reason for severing his connection with the old firm after 33} years' service.
