EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
(FnoM Ora Own- CoßitKsrorDENT.) NF.W PLYMOUTH, January 5. The Taranaki Education Institute to-day entertained the delegates at a picnic. It was tho intentian to proceed to Mountain House at the foot of Mount Kgniont, but vain fell heavily, and after luncheon an impromptu concert programme was gono through, in which the Hon. R. Caldwell (of South Australia) ami Mr ,1. Waddell Smith (of Dunedin) took a prominent part. In spite of the rain a most enjoyable day was spent, and Mount Egmont was seen in its variable moods. At the evening session the following resolutions were passed:— That teachers be not allowed to get a partial • D on the matriculation examination; that the University Senato be requested to make provision for students to got the necessary laboratory practice for certificates in natural and experimental scienco; that there be uniformity throughout New Zealand in the examination and classification of pupil teachers. In connection with the remit that the instiluto expresses its dissent from the proposal of the Royal Commission or. Teachers' Salaries to withdraw departmental recognition of university degrees in its classification, the institute representatives on the commission stated that the report on certificates is-being misconstrued throughout New Zealand, the commission intending their report to mean tliat it is unnecessary for the New Zealand Education Department to issue to higher teachers certificates, the university diploma being sufficient in itself. Tho remit was lost by 22 to 17. On the motion of Mr Law Hie Sli'iiding Orders were suspended to enable him to ,move a resolution that the officers of tho institute and the elected members of tl-e executive be nominated and elected by ballot instead of by open nomination, a series of ballots to be gone through if necessary '. to secure an absoluto majority. The nomination ballot for the presidentship has been taken. The voting ballot resulted as follows:—Murray, 21: JetTcry, 11: Law, 8. Mr Murray having secured an absolute majority was elected. On the first vote for the cxeculivc -Messrs Davidson, Clark, Grundy, Hodge, ]aw, and Stewart received the highest nomination votes, and the elective Imllot resulted in Mcisre Davidson (?,6). Stewart (31), and Grundy (30) being returned. Messrs (.ill and Scott were almost unanimously re-elected secretary and treasurer respectively. The institute adjourned at midnight, but continues its sitting tin 1 Monday. Many memhers, however, are leaving by tho first train,
