(Received Jan. 4, at 8.30 a.m.) l'ubtic interest in the cricket situation yesterday may be gauged by the fact that just on 17,001) persons witnessed the match. The fine display bv the colts Unit and Armstrong raised enthusiasm to a high pitch. The pair had a chance each at the wicket, otherwise their innings was faultless. Tltev made a new record for tho last wicket in test matches. Duff's work stamps him as a batsman of rare skill. He made excellent use of tho opportunity to justify his selection. With public opinion strongly opposed to his inclusion—a condition calculated to try the nerves of the stoutest—he showed his possession of the characteristics necessary for a great cricketer. Armstrong, too, showed splendid form, and it will bo hard to leave- either out of the Australian team for the next English tour. A hard row was set the Englishmen to hoe, and disaster came in the first few minutes, iyldeslcy's stand was of great service. He gave a fair exhibition of his batting skill, although on the defensive. When one cuinpares the fine stand Maclaren and Hayward made in Sydney with the dissolution of the partnership here for a couple of runs, the uncertainty of cricket was once more demonstrated. Noble's present form is marvellous. The barmen agree that his swerve in the air is one of the most difficult things they have ever had to combat with. SiDNEV, January 4. (Received Jan. 4, at 10 a.m.) Tho Daily Telegraph advocates leaving the final selection of the team in future tests till the morning of the match. Local betting strongly favours the chaiices of the Australians pullinc off tho match to-day. D
