THE ROYAL VISIT.

OPENING OP THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT. i'rese Associitioß— By Telegraph—CopyrisUt. .MELBOURNE, May 10. • (Received May 10, at 12.27 p.m.) The Duke reviews some 15,000 troops at Flemington this afternoon. The weather is beautiful aud'clear, with a strong, cold wind. (Received May 10, at 1 p.m.) A sight never to be forgotten was the assemblage which, greeted the Duke of York yesterday. Many thousands throughout Australia, wi'l envy those present the mere fact of making units of such a memorable occasion. As the Dui'je pronounced Parliament open the Duchess pressed an electric key, which gave the signal for hoisting the Union Jack and sending a .message to England declaring that the royal envoys had accomplished their mission. Lieutenant Uru and 16 Maoris who took part in the royal escort. were cheered,at various points. Wittn the royal visitors crossed the 'bridge, into the city the. stands were black with people. Mighty cheers rang out, echoing * up and down the river like the sound of thunder. The Governor-General, too, came in for an enthusiastic reception along the route. The military sight of the day was seen on the steps of Parliament House. There, in interesting contrast, the navy and army veterans of Grev.t Britain, wearing with unconcealed pride their: medals, numbering 250, wero surrounded % the boy soldiers of Victoria to the muiibei* of 4500. The little fellows wero perched on the steps and walls and balustrades in endless lines of khaki, streaktfl with thin touches of red. In front, the senior cadets, in dark blue, formed the guard o.t hqnour. Most of the veterans wore medi\ls gained during the New Zealand war, btAt ihere and there were strong, old men ready to show their medals for the Crimean War, the Burmese War, the Indian Mutiny, and for many a one of Britain's little wars, of which there are so many that their very naujes sound strange. Most of the visiting wanihips are berthed at Port Melbourne. They were visited by 20,000 persons yesterday. The Senate concert in the evening was a most brilliant spectacle. It was attended by the royal visitors. The investiture of knighthoods will take place at Government House to-morrow evening. The Right Hon. G. H, Eeid's condition shows a, slight improvement. REHKW AT FLEMINGTON. , (Received May 11, at 0.35 a.m.) Flemington road was reminiscent of Cup Day with its crowds of vehicles. Unfortunately, tbe sucness of tho review was marred by occasional showers of driving Tain. Nevertheless there was an enormous attendance of the public. At 2 o'clock the Duke, in the uniform ot a colonel of the Grenadier Guards, arrived, attended by Lord Hopetoun, in the uniform of the Commander-in-Chief, Prinde Alexander of Teck in the uniform of the 7th Hussars, the Dnke of Roxburghe and Viscount Crichton in the uniform of the Royal Horse Guards. The Duchess and suite came in a carriage. The Duke then rodo down the lines and inspected the different regiments. After, this was accomplished tho royal party took up a position in front of the royal pavilion to witness the march past of both arms of the service, naval and military, numbering 15,000 men and cadets. With the exception of the Victorian, the other States' infantry was undei the command of Colonel Penton (New Zealand). The wholo of the Federal troops were under the supreme command of Major-general French. The royalties attended the mayor's reception to-night. * AN UNTRUE STORY. The story which is being circulated about the intention of the Duke of York to give a present to tho parents of every child born in Australia on the day of landing is entirely without foundation. Already a great many birth certificates have been received by the Duke's secretary. BRISBANE, May 10. (Received May 10, ot 9.39 a.m.) The prominent feature of the city decorations will be an immense four-sided arch, composed of wool and other products of tie State,
