Tho 6.5. Whangape left for Lyltelton yesterday, but unfortunately got out of the channel bolow the islands. The 8.8. Waikora left for Melbourne, via the Bluff and Hobart. yesterday afternoon. . The B.s. Mararoa is to leave Hie tongue wharf at 3 p.m. to-day for Sydney, via Auckland. The s.s. Rangalira commenced both to take in and put out cargo at the George street pier yesterday. Her inward cargo consists of 600 bales of wool from Oamaru for the ship Invercarßill, now loading at Dunedin. The inward passengers by the s.s. Waihora, from Sydney, via Cook Strait, which arrived on Sunday afternoon, were Slcsdames Spinks and Fretwcll, Misses Mount, Morley, and Bontley, Dγ Hunter, Messre Percival, Fretwell; and 16 steerage. A new shaft is being put into the e.s. Wanaka, which is expected to be floated nut of tho graving dock to-day, and her place taken tin by the e.s. Tarawera. :Tho KZ.S. Company's Papamii, which left Monte Video on February 22. picked up a French barque two days off Vigo Bay, on the Spanish coast, and towed her into that port. The barque had lost her rudder 35 days previously, and when picked up by the Papanui the crew were almost foodlefs.

The 8.8. Kumara took in a large quantity of cargo at the George street pier yesterday. She leaves Port Chalmers this afternoon for the'ripr'tV.' '* • . An accident occurred fo the e.g. WhanRapo yvhile coming down from Dunedin yesterday afternoon, and off Quarantine Island fcilot Thomson was sent to her assistance. The Grey River Argus is informed that during tho recent trip of the Mapourika 0 petition was presonted to tho manager of the Union Steam Ship Company asking that 86 tho convenience and comfort of the Ma.jiirika is eo euperior to that of the usual bonti running on the Coast, she be retained on that line, fully bclieyinc: that under the present command the risk was no greater than of the average on this coast. This petition ha's been forwarded to the head office at Dunedin. H.H. battleship Duncan was launched by'the/ Thames Ironwork and Shipping Commny on March 21. The Duncan is one of the class of that name, the principal features of which, according to the "Naval Annual,"

aro to lie " high speed," with great stability and_ buoyancy. Protection is- secured by vertical eido armour of Harvcyieed etcel, 7in thick, extending over 293 ft of her length, and continued in gradually decreasing thickness to 3in at tie bowe; and by two protective steel decks, the turtle-back deck being 2in and the main deck liri in thickness. The principal dimensions of the Duncan arc:— Length, 405 f t; beam, tfjjftjmean water draught, 26ft 7in; and displacement, 14,000 tons. Tho armament will consist of four 12inch breech-loading wire gun 3, placed in pairs in two barbettes, plated wilh"ll : >tich steel armour, one forward and tho other aft; 12 6-jnch quick-firing guns hi raro-neuts with 6-inch armour, eight on the main deck and four on the upper deck; .12 12-pomider quickfiring guns, similarly placed) six 3-pounder guns in the fighting tops, and four submerged torpedo tubes.' The' vessel will have two masts, with one fighting top on each. Owing to the increased demand for tonnage, sailing ships havo found buyers that a few years ago would not look at them excepting nt ridiculously low figures. Here are one or two oxamplos. the A!ce3o,' built nine years ego for Liverpool owners at a cost of £22,000, has been busily working for them all that period, and now passes under the German flng at £25,000. A more remarkable instance of-the-upward tendency of sailing vessels' prices—at any rate, second-' hand vessels-is afforded by "the little iron barque Don, of 1115 tons register, which is said to have been purchased by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company tc trado between London and New Zealand,-under their houeo flag, at a cost of £8800.' In September, 1E99, she was sold % her original owners to Italians for £5900; they resold her to Britishers after 12 months' possession for £7500: and die has again changed hau.de for £8E00; thus having increased her selling price nearly 50 per cent, in about 13 months. The barque Strathgryfe put put a quantity more damaged wool yesterday! 'and opened a-third hatchway yesterday 'nftcAioon. The work is beiug carried on- with quick despatch.

THF/STRANDING OF THE ARIADNE. The North Otago Times, says that Captain Willis, Lloyds' agent in tho colony, is- in Oamaru making all the necessary arrangements for launching the Ariadne. The modus operandt will be to dismantle til* vessel and take all the ballast out of lier. Thereafter phe will be lifted up on to the shingle bank, fr.orfi which position she will l» launched onproperly constructed ways. Her masts and ballasting hiving been taken out, (lie hull will bo more easily dealt witli, and from the experience of those in charge of the operations it is recokned that the venturo will be a Biicees3.' However, the work will not be accomplished without considerable expense and trouble, as in taking the masts out alone strong derricks will have to be erected. A strong body of men have been engaged, and a start will be made with the work at once.
