VOLUNTEERS.
An inspection parade of the Engineers wa held on Wednesday evening at the Garrjso Hall. The inspecting officei (Colonel Wcbl was accompanied by Major Beal, and after th inspection the examination of Lieutenant Lace in tho practical portion of his examination wot took place, the inspecting officer afterward expressing his satisfaction therewith. It wil announced that the prizes offered to Nos. 4 an 3 sections by Lieutenant Lacey and Sergcan Flynn respectively for the best attendant combined with cleanliness of arms and nc coutrerucnts, etc., Jor tho last volunteer yea had been won by Sappers M'Kenzie am Etheridge. Both winners hed an unbroken at tendance'during the year. VOLLEY FIKItfG COMPETITION, KOHTI OTAGO SUB-DISTRICT. The following averages were obtained by thi respective corps in North Otago' sub-district and the prize money granted by Goyermnen was divided aniong the three lending com panics. It appears that the Palmerston Rifles with an average of 17,63, fops tho list for tin whole of Otago find Southland, the Duncdii Engineers, with 17.47, being a good second: — Average Palmenton Rifles, £20 Hβ Cd .. .. 17.53 Hampden Rifles, iIG 14.23 Queen's Rifles. Onmnrii, £10 „ ~ 12.93 North Otago Mounttd Rifles .. .. 11.70 Oamaru Hiflea 9.0 C Afler parade of the PnJmerston Rifles on Thursday evening, Mr J. C. Gow (Mayor ol Palmerston), at the request of Lieutenantcolonel Headland, Oamaru, presented n cheque fo. £20 lip Gd to Captain Grant, being tho amount of prize money won by tho corps in the volley firin/j "competition in North Otago subdistrict. Sfr Gow and T/iouten.mt-coloncl Hendland heartily congratulated the corps on the position secured in the competition, ami, expressed. the hope that (his all-round excellence in fihooting would become a nermiment feature of tho company. Captain Grant suitably re J sponded.
