"DEPARTURE FROM THIS COLON I'. . NO OFFICIAL CEREMONY. ' . WELLINGTOIif, January 27. The' Mowing troopers who returned by the Orient have been appointed acting- • .lieutenants in the sixth contingent, subject .to their appointments being confirmed by the Imperial authorities at the front:—Corporals Morrison, Macdonald, and Mitchell, Privates Wood, Wallis, and Blenkhorn. . Captain' Smith, of the Raglan Mounted Rifles, who came into camp expecting to get a commission in the sixth, is not going : to South Africa.' ' The following have been appointed noncoms. ill the Canterbury and Otago section- of the sixth contingent: — No. .19 company (Canterbuiy): Sergeant-major, A. H. Canterbury' section' of Rough RidersSergeant, B. L. Hodgson; corporal, L. Salt; lance-corporal, 'Hutton. The Wellington and southern companies of the sixth contingent embarked here yesterday afternoon on the steamer Cornwall, which is now proceeding to Auckland to 'pick up the rest of the men and horses. In consequence of the death of the Queen there was no organised celebration in honour.'of the departing contingent. The conditions were somewhat depressing, for the temperature was low and a strong 'southerly wind brought up frequent shpwers of rain and sleet. The full strength of the contingent is 560 rank and 'file. Of these 109. will embark at Auckland.' Five hundred and' eighty-three horses, are to be taken, 120 remaining to be shipped north. In " the afternoon at half-past 3 the companies were paraded;in marching order at Newtown Park, where the ground was ankle deep in mild. Colonel Penton, in ' addressing the men, gave some sound advice in a few pithy sentences, immediately after which ai few orders were given,- then "Quick march," and they headed off for the city. Along the line of march the footpaths were lined with people, and a considerable crowd had assembled at the entrance to the 'wharf, where a guard of honour' composed of various volunteer corps and permanent militia had been drawn up. As the cm'tingent marched on to the wharf they were heartily cheered. • On arrival alongside the troopship they were drawn up and addressed by the Act-ing-Premier and; the Mayor. Both gentlemen wished jthe men God-speed, good luck, and a> safe return after they bad'performed their cliity to their country. , Mr Ward made special reference in his .speech to the fact that within 15 days .over 550 men had been horsed and fully equipped for service, a record which he thought, might , well be regarded as marvellous in this colony. After the speechmaking,' which was exceedingly brief, the friends and relatives of the men were ad.mitted .to the wharf in order that mutual good-byes might be said. After about Half an hour the ranks were ! formed again,. and the soldiers marched ■ aboard the transport, whose gangway and .bridge were heavily draped in black. The .Cornwall was clear of her berth shortly ■ after 6 o'clock, and as she steamed away .in 3i heavy downpour of rain the contingent . cheered! lustily in response to farewells , wavSd to them. The Hon. J. G. Ward, who intended , going on ,to Auckland to-night in order to . see .the-last of >the contingent, was thrown from, his hack yesterday, and sprained one -of his ankles. 1 The injury will prevent him going north.

. DEPARTURE FROM AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, January 30. The Auckland section of the sixth contin--1 gent received an enthusiastic farewell to-day, ; though,'owing to the Queen's death, the cere- ' inony • Was •practically curtailed to a few speeches. Iu the vicinity of the Drillshed,

though not a holiday, an enormous crowd gathered, and the whole line of march witnessed a vast number of speotators. Tho troops were heartily cheered as they passed along. The crowd was most orderly and good-humoured. The southern sections met the. Aucklatidcrs at the Drillshed, Tho speakers were the Hon. J. M'Gowan, the Mayor (Mr D. Goldie), and Rabbi Goldstein (secretary of the Send-off Committee). Ail spoke in patriotic terms, sympathetic reference being made to the death of the Queen, otf.ing to Which sad event much of (he original programme fof the send-off had been abandoned. ' Mr M'Gowan read the following, telegram from the GovernorOn the eve of your departure to South Africa to serve his Majesty, I pray that the Almighty may grant you a safe passage, a successful mission, and a happy return. I feel sure the sixth contingent will ever uphold the dignity of the King and the honour of his Empire. Our eyes will be on your movements and our hearts on your success." The Premier cabled as follows: — " Convey to the officers and men of the departing contingent my hearty and sincere good wishes for their welfare, I fcol sure they will acquit themselves in a manner worthy those of our contingents who are now in South Africa, and bring home laurels to our colony. Give them my best wishes, and wish them God-speed." The ceremony closed with the National Anthem and hearty cheers. The contingents embarked about 5 p.m., the Cornwall being followed down the harbour by a numbor of yachts and other vessels. Prior to the departure of tho Cornwall, Lieutenant-colonel Banks, who went in charge of the contingent, was presented by the Auckland Racing Club with a purse containing lOOsovs, in recognition of his services to the club in the capacity of judge. The American Tobacco Company presented the members of tho contingent with 5000 cigarettes. Trooper O'Sullivan, a southern member of the sixth contingent, fell down-stairs at a hotel through his spurs catching, and hurt his back, which liatl previously been injured. He was sent to the hospital, and had to be left behind.
