OPENING THEATRES DURING MOURNING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin,—Tour correspondent John Joseph, in to-day's issue, lectures you and the management of the theatres because the latter have had the common decency, even while suffering loss thereby, to show respect for their dead Queen by suspending for a time. John Joseph (who disclaims interested motives, seeing ho has no interest in theatres, but large interests in hotels) bewails the fact that the shutting of the theatres will drive people to tho publichouso. Sir, isn't it ft pity that " John Joseph," who is so largely interested in hotels, and evidently quite appreciates their demoralising tendonoy—isn't it a pity that he did not set about making arrangements with his confreres to shut their houses voluntarily for ono day at this time, thoreby showing their own respect for tho Queen, allowing their employees to do tho same, and so minimising the excesses he bewails? He and other people interested in' hotels might havo done this for once- in 60 years; tho public generally would, have thought none the less of them for doing so. I do not kuow whether another opportunity may offer on the day of the burial; if it does, "John Joseph" and all others interested in hotels may rest assured that workors of all grades do not consider whisky and beerdrinking an absolute necessity on a day of national mourning.—l am, etc., Moderate Drinibb, January ZL '
