■WELLINGTON RACES. (Ter United Press Association.' WELLINGTON, January 22. Tho Wellington Racing Club's Summer neeting was opened to-day, 1000 and 5000 were present. The weather ,vas very hot and oppressive, but as the day ivore on a light breeze tempered the heat, tn the chief event the withdrawal of Boreas nid Ideal left each stable with a single representative, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond's :hampion, Renown, was installed a warm favourite. Ho quite justified the confidence placed in him, for, after holdin~ a nice rnndy position throughout the race, he shot ant a furlong and a-half from home, and, making hacks of his opponents, won with ease in the fastest time yet recorded in New Zealand for the distance. In both races for two-year-olds Mr G. G. Stead's representatives—Menschikoff in the Wcllesley Stakes, ind Cruciform in the Nursery Handicapeasily accounted for tho stakes, but only returned email payments to their supporters. Speculation was brisk, and the sum of £16.74-' ivas handled during tho day, as against 614,964- on the first day last year.
