SOME TALL SCORING. Pres3 Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. ■ •• SYDNEY, January Y. Tho weather was hot to-day nnd the wicket fast 'when the match between New South Wales and South Australia was continued. There-was some tall scoring, the New South Wales first innings having so far realised 725 with only six wickets down. Iredalc scored 118, Noble 153, Gregory 168, Duff 119. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 7. The Auckland-Wellington match wa3 commenced this afternoon. There was a. slight ■ drizzle at intervals, which did not tend to help the side which had to field. Auckland was unfortunate enough to lose the toss. They wero at some disadvantage also by the accident' to Stephens that prevented him bowling to .the full extent. There was not, a large attendance. The wicket was in firstrate order for batting, though occasionally fiery. Wellington began unluckily, and. quickly lost two wickets. Clarke and Midla.no, however, completely changed the state of affairs. The ex-Dunedin crack has not been in form since he took up his residence here, and would not havo been in the team bad a number of lending players been able-to take their -places in it. He forced the game from the jump, and though he took risks, all came off in. his favour, especially when he was dropped from an easy chance. His hitting was forcetyl, and mostly along the carpel,, and he kept the field lively for more than an hour. Midlane, a lad of 18 who has already scored one century in interpro. cricket, went on steadily till he liad made another, and was then smaTtly taken off a good stroke, His style was in great contrast to Clarke's, as he played most correct cricket, and punished everything that was loose, especially on the leg side. Two' possible chances in the slips wero nil that could be urged against him. Tucker also stayed in a- long time, and had the bad luck to be captured almost the last ball of tho day when he had made 70, and appeared likely to emulate Midlane to-morrow. Only five wickets fell for 272, and local men were well satisfied with themwlves, as they were supposed to. be weak in'butting. The fielding of the Aunklanders was on the whole good, and some of the men, especially Hay, stopped many tolling hits. But the bowlers were greatly handicapped by tho good wicket and the greasy turf. No less than eight of them were tried. Scores: " • Wellington.—First Innings. Holdsworth, run out ..1 Bobertson, c H. B. Lusk, b Stephens 0 Midlane, c Hay, b Stemson .. ..102 Clarke, c Stemson, bH.
