An extraordinary general meeting of shareholders in the above company was held at tho registered office of tho company last evening. Mr Eoy, chairman o! directors, presided, and there were six shareholders present. The object of the meeting was to confirm sis special resolutions the following, which were duly passed at an extraordinary meeting of shareholders held on the Bth December, 1900:-" (1) That tho memorandum of association of the company be modified as follows:—That clause i bo struck out, and that the following be substituted: 'Tho capital of the company shall bo £11,380, divided into 3003 fully paid-up shares of 16s Sd each and 14,800 contributing ehares of li!s each'; (2) that the name of the company be changed to 'Gunton's Bench Amalgamated Gold Dredging Company (Limited. 1 " Confirmatory resolutions were duly carried. NOTES FROM CROMWELL.' (Fb'ou Our Own Correspondent.) . . ' , CROMWELL, January 7. The recent raine and hot winds have put tho rivers up, and they are now above mean summer level. ■ Moat of the dredges have not, yet made a start, and will not until the rivers fall considerably. The framing of tho Royal Mp.ori is now almost in position, Some timber for the Rise and Shine is on the ground, and tho site is finished. NOTES FROM ALEXANDRA. (From Our Own Coriiespondent.l ■' ALEXANDRA, January 7. The Molyneux is 7jft abovonormal. Dredping is in full swing ngnin. The Perseverance dredge will be stopped for some days as the top tumbler has broken. . THE MATAURA DISTRICT. (Frok Oue Own Correspondent.) GORE, January 7. Mr Thomas Graham, under whose experienced management the Central Mataura- Company's prospecting dredge has recently secured filch' substantial returns, has resigned his position as dredgemacter. The Dome Creek dredge, near Waikaia, was to have commenced dredging to-dny. The Central ilataura Company's prospecting dredge recommenced work on Thursday, after being closed down for the holidays, The new dredge on. No. 1 claim will be working by the end of ihe month. Everything excepting the buckets and tables is in position. Although tho prospects on No. 1 claim arc slightly inferior to No 2, the prospecting dredge secured from l'loz to 20oz. ALPINE EXTENDED QUARTZ COMPANY, LYELL. , TO THE KIUTDH. Snt,—ln your issue of this dnte I read the letter written by " Eighteen Years' Alpine Experience," in which he points out the mismanagement of the claim, and shows very clearly that there is plenty of payable quartz in the mine. I have many letters in my possession that corroborate all the writer states. I ain informed that it is well lmov.-n thnt there is plenty of payable, quartz that could be taken out, anil that some of it would go 9dwt to Joz of gold to the ton, and that if the mine were, worked properly tho shareholders would get dividends, and that in six months the shares would be worth 10s. The same writer , states that tho tributers who are working the mine do not give the company the value of a penny for the quartz they win, and that a mine manager is employed at £i per week, a battery manager at £5, a. miner at £3, and the secretary of the company at £3 per week,. He states, moreover, that the tributers get the quartz crashed at the company's battery for-5s per ton, so apparently shareholders are paying 115 a- week to keep the tributers (?) going, and got nothing in return. j It must be apparent to shareholders that a p change of management is necessary. Tho j annual meeting will be heldnwir tho end of this ! month for the election of directors, etc., fo ' if shareholders will work together for our mutual benefit we will appoint at least two new directors. This can be done if shareholders will at once pay their call now due, and send their proxies to a, man who they know will carry out their wishes. The forms of proxy sent by the company to shareholders generally reach hero only a few days before the meeting'is held at Lyell. There- j fore it is not advisable to wait fov them, or they ' probably would not reach Lyell in time for the meeting. Any shareholders who think proper ; to do so may send their proxies to P.O. Box No. '126, Dunedin, and I will do my best to ; effect tho change of management which would no doubt 1)6 beneficial to all shareholders excei*t to two or three at Lyell. I should like the directors—for tho information of shareholders—to say whether or not j they gave tho tributers (?) £79 of tho com- j pany's money for some purpose, and, if they >. did give tho nfcmey, for what reason did they • give it. If other shareholders will join me, I am prepared to give £5 or more to defray the expenses i of a solicitor and a- competent quartz mining msnager to go to Lyell and investigate tho way tho company's affa-irs have been and are now being conducted.—l am, etc., Shareholdeb. - Dunedin, January 7. THE FOURTEEN-MILE BEACH GOLD DREDGING COMPANY. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see in Thursday's issuo a column or so of ahuso and rambling misstntements signed '. " John Ewing." In the imaginary " Limerick " he is pleased to create for the purpose of , abusing, ho has really given us a truthful-pen-and-ink portrait of himself, a portrait so.neat! and truthful that it conld only be drawn by \ the man who has -lived it so long. _ His | imaginary dialogue is also.good. His spiteful allusions do not apply to the real " Limerick." They are only random " Mid-Molyneux" shots which have fallen flat in "Transmission"; rnoro capitals, please. Although I have no hobby to run the longest pipe-line in the universe, regardless of ox' ponse or consequences, my mining experience is more varied a-nd practical then that of Mr Ewing, and any time that it has been used in an expert capacity it has been at the request of men better able to judge of my qualifications than Mr John Ewing is. So much for personalities. Thero is very little more in his column to answer. I am well aware that no amount of controversy will much improve matters, and I am also well aware that, it will not convinces Mr John Ewing that he was not j born for tho sole purpose of running tho uni- ; verse, however small a unit ho may be in I reality; but it makes me ill to see men who, through sheer persistent ignorance and, stupidity, have brought ono of the best con- | corns on tho river into a state-of chaos, have ; the cast-iron cheek to come out in co!d print I at the eleventh hour to try and fix the results j on others. He says their rejection—no other word wiU suit it—was brought about by , canvassing. I can find no shareholder who will admit that he was canvassed. There is really not a great deal in the matter, and the claim will come out all right directly despite past mismanagement. Mr Robertson, who con- j structed the race, certainly did his duty. The j damage was done before he got there. I can- i not attempt to reply to all the side issues [ Mr Ewing drags in, as I really have, some re-1 gard ior your space. | In conclusion, I must say that the company ■ will not return to a directorate containing any . members whose qualifications are mostly j "paid-ups" and a fulness of bombastic empti- ■ ness, combined with a .penchant for solf-adver- [ tising. - v i I note that Mr Ewing threatens to have something further to say with regard to raining ; experts, brokers, and such like. If he carries his threat into effect I pity the Times' readers, sis Sir Ewing has not yet lenrnod to say anj , - thirjg in less than three columns' of small print.—l am, etc., Liiiehick. I
