WAIKOTJAITIRACES. ' The Waikouaiti Racing Club held their annual meeting on New Year's Day, The weather conditions in the morning did not augur well for the success of tho meeting, a good doal of rain falling, but shortly before noon the sun shone out brightly, and the afternoon was beautifully fine. The attendance, however, was not quite up to the average, but still the club consider the meeting a successful one from a financial poiht of view. The course was ih good order for racing, and some good times were recorded. Only two horses started in the Waikouaiti Cup and the Hawksbury Handicap; but in tho other events the fields were better, especially the. trots, and some good finishes were witnessed. Only one accident occurred during the day—in the County Plate—when E. got a spill owing to Ruby Ring crossing his legs and falling. The horse was a bit shakenj but the rider escaped unhurt. At the conclusion of the Welt'ei Handicap the stewards held a meeting, when they derided to disqualify a jockey named John Lindsay, for-foul riding, consisting of boring .and striking another jockey over the head. -The spectators-wereiafforded plenty of amusement in the trotting races. A Celestial named Jimmy Fong, attired in racing colours and a. pair of gum boots, rodo a mare name'd Blossrm; but after going a short distance the r animal' preferred to negotiate the remainder in an easy canter, and Jimmy, whose riding would, scarcoly grace a circus ring, had apparently quite enough'to do to retain his seat without bringing his mount to trotting pace. Speculation was brisk during the day, the 'mm of £122610s being put through'the totaliFators, of. which there were two—one worked at £1 and the other at 10b'. The amount handled last year was £1034 10s. The secretary (Mr Templeton) had his arrangements well in hand, and all the events .were got off up to time. Mr Gourley gave- every satisfaction as starter, while Mr M. Jamieson acted as olark of the scales. The Port Chalmers Brass Band, under Bandmaster M'Connell, were present, and rendered seyeral selections at intervals during the afternoon. The following are the results:—
