THE LAND AND INCOME TAX.

(riiii UNiTun Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January % The Commissioner of Taxes, in a memo, to the Hon. Mr Ward, says that in'framing the estimate of land and income tax for thg last Financial Statement he thought he had gone as far as prudence would allow in precasting a small increase, ..notwithstanding the concessions made to the taxpayer in the new Assessment Aqt. The land tax has now been collected, and assessments for income tax have been completed sufficiently to justify the belief that the estimate (£425,000) .will-be exceeded by the phenomenal sum of £25,000, which (adds Mr M'Gowan) is evidence of the general prosperity of the colony.
