HOISTING THE FLAG.

At the break-up of the ilosgiol School on Wednesday last one of the most iileasinf; items in the proceedings was the hoisting of aUnion Jack, which Mr A. F. Clieyne, a. local resident,

had very kindly presented to the school. During the hoisting of the flag the school children sung "The Ked, White, and Blue."

The annual break-up and distribution of j>rizus in connection with the Hast Taieri School was held on Friday evening, when there was p. large attendance of children, parents, and friends, Mr it. Cuddle, chairman nf the school committee, presiding. After the distribution of prizes, the function of hoisting a handsome Union Jnck, which, along with the pole, has been presented to the school by Mr R. Ciuidie, took place. Mr Cuddie, in an excellent speech, said the idea of supplying the flags to the ichoote was to create a feeling of patriotism and loyalty among the children. He thought it was not necessary to create loyalty thus, because his opinion was that it wits born in the Britishers. When they saw the flag Hying over Kast Taieri School they were expected to honour it and to love it, and when the boys were grown up, should occasion ariee, they should fight for it. Mr Cuddie then called for the smallest boy in the school, Willie (innton, who hoisted the flag. When the flag was drawn to the summit of the staff' the children sang " (icd save the Queen," and gave three ringing cheers.—Advocate.
