CRICKET.

CANTERBURY v. OTAGO.

The Canterbury v. Olago cricket match was resumed on the Oarisbrook ground yesterday forenoon, but owing to the heavy rain that came on about midclay and continued into the afternoon the contest had to be put off until to-day without advancing the game to any great extent. When play commenced the wicket was found not to have suffered very much from the showers of the previous night and the morning. The grass was damp, and the bowlers found it necessary to have

recourse to plenty of sawdust. It was hoped, when play was discontinued, that the clouds would lift, and that another start would be

made, but when, after a wait of three hours, it was seen that the rain was not likely to go off it was wisely decided co postpone the match until next day. At 11.20 Baker and Siedeberg, the not-out men, resumed their places at the wickets. The Canterbury fielders were placed as under: Boxshali, wickets; Orchard, Callaway, and Pearce, slips; .Ridley, point; Wigley. cover; Harman, mid-off; Sims, tnid-on; Malone, short leg; Reese, extra cover; Barry, third man. Callaway, at the pavilion end, opened to Siedeberg, and sent down a maiden. Pearce' took the leather at the south end. His second ball Baker nicely snicked for 4. Siedeberg got Callaway away to leg for 2, bringing 20 into view on the telegraph board, and the last ball of the over he hit for a single. Callaway was, credited with another maiden, Siedeberg treating him very cautiously. Baker drove Pearca to the off for 3, and scored a single off Callaway. Siedeberg got the same bowler away to leg for a couple. A single to Baker brought the score to 30. Callaway trundled another maiden to Siedeberg. Baker got in another couple with an off drive off Pearce, and then plcied one over point's head, narrowly escaping being caught. Siedeberg hit Pearce nicely to leg for a brace, and Baker, batting carefully, drove Pearce strongly to the on for a similar figure. In Pearce's next over the Granne representative skied him to the off. where Hnrrhan made a safe catch. 39—1—25. Oeddos, the captain, followed. A bye was run, raising Otago's score to 40. and Callaway bowled another maiden to Siedeberg. Geddes opened his account by hitting Pearce to the stand for 3. Siedeberg, playing very patiently, added another single to his score, and Geddes

iva? credited with two singles, one of each mwler. In Pearce's next, over Siedeberg •eceived bis dismissal, playing a ball on to

his wicket. 4-7—3—12. "Austin was next. Oeddes snicked Callaway past slip's hands for 2, and put bis next one away to leg for 3, SO up. . Austin was credited with a single, but soon afterwards he tipDecl Pearce into the1 plips, where Orchard was waiting. s?—^— 1. d. Mills filled the vacancy, mid his first ball from Pearce ho hit, to leg for 4-. " Byes " was credited with 4-. and 60 appeared. Rain began to fall at this time, making thinijs very unpleasant for everybody. Callawav bowled another maiden' to Reticles. T rp to this slage the bowler had sent down 15 over for IS runs.
