THAT FUNNY WRITER, "RATS."
TO THE TiDITOH. Sin,—Tt would be amusing, were it not so dreadfully sad, to notice how often some correspondent—after using contemptuous language re some Scottish subject, which has drawn a mild reproof from another writer—has sheltered himself behind these artificial kopjes erected by Sidney Smith, "Scottish lack'of humour" and "racial economy." After our friend " Rats" has made us smile at his metaphorical octopus—the bagpipes—and has caused Mr Henderson, between bursts of Doric merriment, to capture by frontal attack this Boorish combatant, the latter cries, " Not fair; play the game ! Didn't you see my flag of truce just behind the muzzle of my Mauser? The good old tricolour of humour," wit. and fun! I was not going to shoot you. Can't you see a-joke? " Well, let us own that " Rats " wrote a very comic letter. He did not mean what ho said'; he meant just the onposito. Come on, Mr Henderson, shake " Rats " by his forepaw— he wanted all the time, but was too bashful to cry, TUorii>i:s For. Evm:. Oamaru, December 24.
