PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED.

" How to Take the Baths and Drinking Waters at Rotorua and Te Aroha " is the title of n brochure by Mr James Muir. late hydropathic specialist to the Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain Board. The advice which is contained m it will be found of considerable value to persons visiting the Hot Lakes for a course of the- waters. There are some visitors to the thermal district who bathe indiscriminately. It is n great mistake. It is of importance to tourists to know how to take the baths, and when to take them, nnd what kind of baths to take. Upon some of these points they would be wise to act only under medical advice, but the observance of the general rules which Mr Muir lays down for the guidance of bathers will, in the absence of such advice, tiutiuestionably be of distinct advantage, llr Muir evidently understands whtit he is writing about, and his brochure contains testimonials from ;t number of visitors to the baths who certify that they have received benefit from his treatment while they were undergoing a course of the waters. Mr Muir seems, however, to have some grievance against the. management of the baths. He speaks of the arrangements at Rotoruii in terms of disparagement that suggest that he has some private grounds of complaint regarding them.

Mills, Dick, and Co.'s Otago, Southland, and South Canterbury Almanac nnd Directory for IBM is to hand. This useful publication is the only survivor of a number of publications of a similar nature published in the early days. Most of its rivals have boon absorbed by"it, and their best qualities assimilated. The directory appears to have? been carefully revised to date. The other features of the. almanac, which ore well known, include garden and farm calendars, hints on the management of stock, customs tariff, particulars of the principal harbours of the colony, ready reckoners, and general useful information.

We have received from Mr W. ,T. Prictor the Christina* number of the Illustrated London News. It is an excellent combination of, charming illustrations and Christmas literature. The lurpe, coloured illustration entitled "Sympathy " is a beautiful reproduction of Briton Riviere's picture.

" For Their Queen and Union Jack " is the title to the latest patriotic song. It is written by Mr W. E. CTrantlmm, and comnosrci by Lawrence F. Walkinr,, th« Dresden Company, Wellington, being the rmblishers. The words are manly, with a good ring about them. The music is of n. martial character, so thnt the pong should become nopnlnr. The arrival of the troopers by the Moana at Wellington was the Oceanian on whu'.b it was fivfif. sung hi miblic.
