At the twenty-third annual meeting of the Patients and Prisoners' Aid Society the report showe,d that the subscriptions amounted to £405 odd and the expenditure, to £382 odd. The agent of the society (Mr Torrance), who acts as chaplain at the gaol, hospital, and Seacliff Lunatic Asylum,.had been able to do a great deal of quiet but offeotive work during the year. The following were elected office-bearers':—President, Mr Justice Williams;. vice-president, Mr B. E. C. Quick; hon. treasurer. Mr W. Hislon; committee— Messrs G. Fenwick, R. .Chisholm, A. S. Paterson, P. Duncan, W. Gow, E. R. Smith, P. Ba-nv F- Z. Moore, AY. Dowhie Stewart, T. H. Dick, Captain Thomson, and Dr Hislop. .. The twenty-fifth annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand was held at the offices of the company on November 26, the Hon. G. M'Lean, M.L.C. (chairman of directors), presiding. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet for the year ended 30th' September last, passed in review the work of the- year, and gave an interesting account of the company's operalions. The directors' report recommended the payment of a dividend of 4- per cent, for (he six months, making, with the interim dividend paid in May last, a total dividend of 7 per cent, for the year. Mr Kempthorno seconded the report, and, after a few complimentary remarks from the Hon. A. Lee Smith, the recommendations of the directors were carried unanimously. The retiring dilector (the Hon. George M'Lean) was unanimously re-elected, as were the retiring auditors (Messrs Alex. Bartloman and Walter Hislop). After a vote of thanks to the directors, officers, and staff, afloat and ashore, which was diily acknowledged by the Hon. George M'Lean and Mr JumeE Mills, the meeting closed.
The Oato Pa Church at Tauranga was consecrated on the 2nd inst by the Bishop of Waiapu, the services being of a very elaborate character. The church was crowded, and the proceedings were deeply interesting to the local people. The church is erected on the" site of the old Gate Pa stronghold, and has several venerable reminiscences of old times on its walls. The interesting ceremony also created a great deal of interest amongst the Natives.
The foundation stone of the new ohapel to be erected in connection with the Dominican Priory, Dunedin, was laid by Bishop Yerdon on Saturday, Bth inst., the Feast of Mary ot the Immaculate Conception to whom the new building is dedicated. The ceremony was per formed by the Bishop, assisted by Fathers Murphy and Cleary. A copy of the current issue of the New Zea'and Tablet, together with several coins of the realm, were placed in the foundation stone. The work is progrossing rapidly, the concrete foundations being already complete.—Tablet.
