MRS FOGO'S CASE.

THE DEATH SENTENCE COMMUTED.

(Per Ukitkh Phv.ss Assoct.wion.)

CHRISTCTTURCH, December 15.

The Cabinet met to-day, when it was decided to commute the sentence of death passed on Mrs Fogo for the murder of her husband at Duncdin to penal servitude for life.

/ The favourable news was conveyed to the unfortunate woman by Mr Phillips as soon as ho received it. As there is gome misconception as to the meaning of the sentence " imprisonment for life," il may be explained that when such a sentence'is passed the prisoner by good conduct may reduce t.ho sentence to 20 years. In the case of a. death sentence commuted to imprisonment for life, however, it means what is implies, unless the clemency of the- Crown is exercised at somo future period.
