The s.s. Moana, the commodore ship of the Union Steam Ship Company's fleet, arrived at Pott Chalmers at 5.30 a.m. of Saturday, and was berthed at the George; street pier. Karly as the hour was. she had barely lowered her gangway before scores of visitors anxious to greet the returning members of the New Zealand contingent to South Africa, were on board conveying hearty greetings to our boys, who one and all 'presented a very fit appearance. Port Chalmers was a lil:lsso of bunting on Saturday in honour of the arrival by the s.s. Moana of the returning- members of the Now Zealand contingent who have seen active service in South Afnea. The flags at the Town Hall, the signal station, Dock Trust, Union Steam Ship Company and other shipping companies, the public school, and nearly all the business places, with the residences of many private citizens, wore specially notieeabit-; while the residence of the ex-mayor (Mr John Mill) presented a brilliant appearance, that gentleman displaying a multiplicity of flags, very tastefully grouped. -~■.. The s.s. Corinua, from the West Coast, via way ports, arrived yesterday, and was berthed at 'the .Telty street wharf.

The s.s. Elingamite. from Sydney, via northern ports, reached Dunedin yesterday morning. She left Sydney on the sth iiisb., and arrived at Auckland on the 10th. Great activity h displayed in the U.S A. with shipbuilding, and in the month of November the six-mnstcd schooner Eleanor A. Percy, 2700 tons register, was launched from the yard of Percy .7. Small, at Bath, Maine. At Bncksport there was launched a fourmaelert schooner, the thirdthis year, and there is another on the stocks which will slide oft in December. At Camden, H. M. Bean has a four-master and also a five-master on the stocks, the latter to register 2100 tons, and has just signed a contract for another five-master of 2200 tons. It will be rememixTed that the 6-moftcd schooner George W. Wells, 1700 tons, was launched from this yard in August. At Rockland there is a five-master on the stocks and also at Walboro. where George W. Wells has just signed a contract for another fivemaster. The Marine Journal, from which the above facts are culled, says:—" Wnges are good in all yards, and at Bath men cro m demand. The year's new tonnage is likely to amount to 75,000 tons net register., or 50 per cent, more than the output of 1399.

AN EVENTFUL VOYAGE.

The last American mail brought news of a sensational voyage of the four-masted barque Springbank, from Newcastle to San Francisc». The vessel left Newcastle on July 28, with 3860 tons of coal, and all went well until in lat. 32.13 S., long. 173.8 E. There a terrific hurricane struck the vessel, and threw her on her beam ends. The cargo shifted to port, and for 12 days she wallowed in the trough of the sea. Big seas made clean breaches over her, and the cabin and forecastles were gutted. On September 11. in lat. 26.3 N.. long. 173.45 W., the ship ran on a reef. When an observation could bo made, it was found that the vessel was on Lisiuneky Island., a small coral affair. The crew at once began to lighten the ship forward. Four hundred and fifteen tons of coal were jettisoned, and then, after 15 days of heaving and hauling, the vessel got out through the channel and into deep water. The pumps were, sounded, and 23ft of water was found in the fore peak. Luckily the collision bulkhead held, and as the coal liad been all taken from the forward part of the ship fairly good progress was made. Onco away from Lisiansky Island the ship had strong north-wsst to south-west winds, and made a good run to Sau Francisco.
