OPENING OF TIIE CENTRAL ELECTRIC DREDGE. (Fhom a Cokbkspoiident.) CROMWELL, October 4. The opening of the Central Electric dredge was celebrated at 4 p.m. to-day. The weather was all that could be desired. There wero present upwards of 100 people, about half of this number consisting of the fair sex, who generously supplied relreshments of all descriptions in abundance. The opening was one of the finest and most popular events that ha-_t been witnessed in our district. Mr Jolly, a popular resident of Cromwell, and one of the largest shareholders, on behalf of the Contral. Electric Company, briefly explained the object of the gathering, and expressed .himself ao being highly satisfied with the dredge and the smooth way in wliich the wholo of the machinery worked, reflecting great credit on the consulting engineer, the contractors for the machinery (the Dunedin Engineering Company), and the constructing engineers (Messrs W. G. Mouat and party), who had beyond doubt carried out the work in a creditable manner. Mr Mouat, who was theu called upon, in a few well chosen remarks explained that tho Central Electric dredge was ono of the largest and most up-to-date dredges of the Molyneux fleet. Nothing hud .been spared by him nnd his party to turn out a complete aud finished work. The machinery was strong and powerful, anbj ho was sure that it would work smoothly. The company had a valuable claim, and he hoped that ere long they would be able to have a. word with their neighbouring dredge (Hartley and Riley) in bumping returns. The success of the dredge was then drank, and Mrs Jolly then christened the dredge the Central Electric, wliich -was done in the usual way by breaking a bottle bf champagne. Steam was then turned on, and everything worked with perfect smoothness. The ladder was lowered and dredging staited, the buckets coming up brimming full. This was kept going for fully an hour. It is*oeldom that a dredge starts oil so smoothly as did the Ccutral Electric, ancl the directors should feel pleased at having such a good and smooth-running dredge. The dredge was handed over to Mr J. Taylor, engineer, who will run hor for one month for the Duueclin Engineering Company, when she will be handed over to the conipany. The river is rising fast, and it is expected the dredge will be dropped clown the river on to the lower portion of her claim early next week.

Messrs Mouat and polity are making good headway with the erecting of the machinery for the Alpine Consols and Alpine No. 2. Most of the heavy machinery is in position, aud if the balance comos soon to hand these two dredges Will be completed early in iNovember.

. NOTES FROM ALEXANDRA. (Fbom Oub Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, October 6. Tho Molyneux continued to rise throughout the night til! early morning, reaching a maximum height of about Gilt, being a rise of over -1 ft. The river is subsiding again, and this afternoon was about sft ahove normal. Tho staff of workmen to build the Dart Company's pontoons left Alexandra this morning. The returns from the local dredges are again good. . NOTES FROM CLYDE. CFbom Oub Own Coi.bespoudf.nt.'l CLYDE, October S. The Cairnmuir pontoons were successfully launched last evening. The river is now. falling slowly. The weather has cleared up, and is bright and shiny again. NOTES FROM-CROMAA TELL. (Fhom Our Own Cobr'p.si>oudent.) CROMAVELL, October G. The weather is fine, nnd the rivers are falling. The Junction Electric, dredge has moved to the foot of her claim, and has started on the Central Electric boundary. THE GREY RIVER DREDGE. (Feom Oue Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, October 6. The return, from the Grey River dredge for the week ending to-duy was 13oz for 115 hours.
