AUCKLAND, August 10.
At the inquest on the bodies recovered at Motu a verdict of " Accidentally drowned " was returned. The excessive, grief of the parents of the children drowned was painful to witness. The beach is constantly patrolkd for miles by the fathers, mothers, brothers, and' friends, in tho hope of seeing the little ones washed ashore. On Thursday the body of Pani, to whose carelessness tho accident is attributed, was washed ashore, fearfully mutilated by sharks. Another body, that of a little girl, was also washed ashore. The canoe, which was a mere cockleshell, 24-ft long, with a 3ft beam, came ashoro 10 miles west of the scene of tho disaster.
A fatal accident occurred while the afternoon train was proceeding from Auckland to Helensville. A man" was standing on tho platform, and while the train was going down an incline and round a sharp curve, he was thrown off. His head struck the rails. The train put back, and the man was found quite dead. Papers found showed him to bo Patrick Morran. A similar accident occurred at the same place about a year ago. A man named Robert Strong, an inmate of the lunatic asylum, strangled himself by tying a handkerchief round his neck. He was found dead in bud. He had been previously searched, no handkerchief being found. -Ho had been an inmate of tho asylum for some time. At the inquest a verdict was returned that the man strangled himself while insane.
HOKITIKA, August 10. A Native youth named Jack Skcrrott, aged 12, was killed while playing at the Flowery Creek sawanill yesterday. Being unobserved, a log was rolled on him, and he died immediately on being released. An inquest will bo held to-lay.
INVEROARGILL, August 10.
John Lee, a labourer employed by the Union Company at the Bluff, was struck by the midnight train from town. He was thrown clear of tho lino, but sustained serious injuries, and is not likely to recover.
•Tho man Michael Wallace, who was run over by a tramcar last Saturday evening and had both logs broken, is now pronounced to be ;u-ettj well out of danger,.
