On May 4 a fire occurred in the town, and a large quantity of stuff removed from the. shops was stacked in the street, and afterwards distributed' for protection in the shorts adjacent. Grant's shop, next the theatre, was so used for goods which belonged to Mr R. Gray, clothier and ' outfitter. In Haywood's case, which was taken first, it was shown that he practically admitted that the goods* were Gray's, and in an answer to a remark by a detective implicated another person, 'in Grant's case, the identification of the goods was weak, and the invoices for the goods purchased by him from wholesale houses were produced. These, however, did not contain the goods covert coats, etc.—found by the police in his house. To account for these he said they had been left at his shop by persons lie ' did not know.
