A FRIEND TO THE PRISONERS.
It would appear that a gentleman well known in New Zealand—possibly a New Zealander —is entitled to great-,credit for looking after the comfort* of the British prisoners near Pretoria. Captain T. M'lncrney, of Victoria, in a letter writes:—"A Mr Leigh Wood, who is the manager of the Natal Bank in Pretoria, and who was here during the whole of the war, arid is, I believe, well known in Wellington, N.Z., did great work for the
men. He organised committees and oklained funds to the oxtent of some thousands of pounds, and spent them in providing little iicmforts for the men at Watcrvnl,' and necessaries for the sick in hospital. Great credit is due to him, and I would be glad if the Leader, th? Australasian, and Sydney Bulktin would mention in their columns the factthat Mr Wood rendered yeoman service to tlie men al Waterval who were prisoners of war, so that Mr Leigh AVood's friends in New Zealand might know of the. good work he has dono."
