ELECTRIC POWER FOR CITY TRAMS
TO THE EDITOn,
Sin,—Referring to communications appearing in last Friday's Times, the power obtainable from Taieri River is given as 2029 horse The figures should have been 2761. This error, however, does not alter the figures 4790, the combined horse-power of Taieri and Lee Stream. .
There will shortly be in Dunedin an electrical'engineer of great experience, coming here on. behaJf of Messrs Noyes Brothers, Sydney, the colonial representatives of one of the largest electrical power companies of America. The^ gentleman referred to, Mr Goodman, is coming to superintend the power installation of the Roslyn-tram, and would, doubtless, be willing, for a reasonable fee, to inspect and report on the'Taieri and Waipori schemes. As an outsider, entirely unbiassed, and having great experience in a. class of work new to our local engineers, would it not be well for the corporation to take advantage of his presence and obtain from him a report. A few months ago there were no rights on the Waipori River near the gorge. Unfortunately the opportunity of securing the whole power in the river gorge was allowed to slip by the corporation, and only some two months ago. the warden granted a valuable right, the holders of which, however, can probably be dealt with on equitable terms.—l am, etc.,

TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —A perusal of the map of Otago will indicate to " Citizen " that the total catchment area.of the Waipori River is but slightly in.excess of that of the Lee Stream. The head available is practically the same in both case?, therefore ; the excess of power at Waipori over that of the Lee Stream is not great, and oertainly does not warrant the council in going double the distance for its power. Apart from the Taieri River, the minimum power obtainable from the Lee is ample for carrying on the work of three tram systems such as that of the Dunedin city and suburban tramways.~l am, etc., Dunedin July 28.
