ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The ordinary monthly meeting of 'the Council of the Acclimatisation Society of Otago was held yesterday afternoon; x:)l'esen^ —Messrs A. C. Begg (chairman), Loasby, Edgar, Stronach, Farquhar, Thomson, Buckland, Forrest, Dr de Lautoiir, Dr Macpherson, Messrs Dean's-and Russell. ■ ,

A letter -.was read from -the Canterbury Society..asking the society whether it would defray half-cost'of importing'some chamois. — The matter was discussed in its relation to the cost, and it was decided to reply that the cost would be too great. . .

An offei ol tench from the Oamaru Society was accepted, and it was decided to put the fish in the . Tomahawk Lagoon. ;

A gratuity of- £10 was voted to Mr D. Bell for his supervision of deer at' Lake Hawea.

A vote of thanks to Mr Blackwood, Melbourne for a. presentation of three young red deer was passed. :

During the past-month we ha-ve been biisy collecting. ovaVThe stock fish at Clinton hayij.now all spawned, except.the rainbow trout;: these we start with next week. The numbers obtained from the -other varieties are as follows: — Salmon, .30,000; Scotch burn, 118,000;. Loch Leven,. 158,000; and crossbred, 3000. As.Mr M'Kenzie's time' has been fully occupied in effecting repairs, cleaning -ponds, and attending to the ova, I have been endeavouring to secure as many brown'trout ova- in this district as possible, and have succeeded in obtaining 252,000, making, a total of ova ;up to date of 561,000. Rangei' Peterson, Romahap.i, has kindly contributed towards this number, and Mr Black has, as usual, given his services gratis, and has. been of very great assistance at this work.
