BRITISH WARSHIPS AT SHANGHAI. HONGKONG, July 27.

Admiral Seymp.ur sent two battleships and two cruisers tq Shanghai, despite the Viceroy's declaration that the presence of warships at Shanghai would provoke a disturbance.
(REPORTED JAPANESE VICTORY.
It is reported at Tokio that the Japanese at Shanhaikwan have gained a great victory. /
LI HUNG CHANG'S ASSURANCES.
t HONGKONG, July 27. (Received July 28, at 0.20 a.m.)
Li Hung Chang assured the consuls that the Government had' sufficient control of the troops and Boxers to ensure the safe conduct of Ministers to Tientsin if hostilities were, suspended. He asserted that Sir. R. Hart was alive. The fate of the other Europeans at' Peking was unimportant.

(Received July 28, at 1.12. a.m.) The Government commissioned Captain Hixson to raise a contingent for China. It is understood it will consist of 200 naval men and 50 to 75 of the third contingent.
A CONFIRMATORY MESSAGE.
MELBOURNE, July 27. (Received July 27, at 10 a.m.) The secretary of the China Inland Mission has received a cable from Shanghai stating that the Misses Searell and Whitechurch, missionaries, were killed at Shansi.
