SUPPORT THE LOCAL BANDS. TO THE EDITOR.

Sip.,—For a good many weeks a foreign.band has been playing about the streets of Dunedin, and, judging by the length of their stay, the public must be contributing fairly liberally to the hat which is passed round.

Regarding the band itself I have no desire to say anything. This is a free ceuntry, arid if there are sufficient persons in the community who appreciate its admittedly good music and voluntarily pay for it, well and good. But I think there is just ground for complaint when this street band is engaged for public functions to the exclusion of our own bands.

The language of the Stock Exchange was fervidly patriotic on Mafeking Day, but it seemed tc me that the action of one Exchange was at variance with their words when, they engaged the foreign band at a sum which, any of the town bands would gladly have accepted. The excuse made was a very weak one, that they did not think they would be able to get hold of a local band.

One of the leading clubs of this city has also, I understand, engaged this Austrian Band, when they could have secured the services of a local one quite as easily, and at no greater expense. At all times the bands, of Dunedin have willingly come forward and assisted in cases of charity or at public demonstrations, and during the la3t 12 months the number of outdoor concerts given by these bands has been considerable. Taking these facts into consideration, and also that funds are always required for the purchase of new music, etc., it seems to me that it is decidedly unfair and unpatriotic that when paid engagements are made, to pass over our local bar.ds and accept the services of a body of itinerant musicians.—l am, etc.,

A City Bandsman.
