TREATMENT IN HOSPITALS, SOUTH AFRICA.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —I am not much of a scribe, but really I. cannot let Trooper AY. A. Snunders's remarks re treatment in hospitals

pass without some little comment. Trooper Ssumders says the only redeeming point about the military hospitals—field, {base, or general—are the civilian surgeons, the nurs-

iuef sisters, and St. John Ambulance. Now, I know for a fact that Trooper 'Saunders was never in any of the base or general

hospitals for treatment. I am not speaking of what I have heard, but what I have seen. All the time Trooper Saunders was in Capetown ho was living privately, and from what he told me there before I left he had not been long in the field hospitals at the front. Now, a man cannot judge the treatment in any hospital without he ha 3 been treated in it for some time, and I think Trooper Saundors should only express an opinion on what ho lias seen, and not on what ho has heard. A patient cannot exnect the very best of treatment in field hospitals, but the 11.A.M.C. and medical staff do tlio best" they can for the invalids (a good beet it is, too) while there, and I, who have seen a Rood deal of field, base, and general hospitals (worse luck), can assure the dear people of New Zealand that there is no room for complaint.—l am, etc., Teoofer Culling. Hillgrovc, July 24.
