(Received July 24, at 9.50 p.m.) With reference to Lord Brassey's proposal of Australian reserves, Mr M'Lean considers the loyalty of the colonies is such that thej- would readily raise help whenever' the Empire requires it without the expense of keeping a standing army. Such ■ help would best be secured by means of citizen soldiery trained to ride and shoot, LORD HOWE ISLAND. SYDNEY, July 24. (Received July 24, at 9.18 a.m.) Mr Frank Parnell, ex-member of the Legislative Assembly, has been appointed honorary magistrate at Lord Howo Island. He visits there in a few weeks. A TEST CASE. The Full Court have decided that all ex-civil servants whose offices have been abolished by Government after serving a certain term are entitled to superannuation allowance. The case was a test one, and the decision involves a large amount. ' KILLED BY DYNAMITE FUMES. BRISBANE, July 24. .(Received July 24, at 9 a.m:) Two brothers, named Smiley, descended a mine after firing a charge of dynamite, and were killed by the fumes. MUSICAL EXAMINATIONS. (Received July 24, at 9.18 a.m.) Mr Stewart Macpherson, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, has arrived hero for the purpose of conducting musical examinations. He visits New Zealand after finishing Queensland and New South Wales.
