It is now known that the plague-stricken rats have travelled through the Auckland province as far as Mokau., Rats, have also been dying of plague at Aramolio.-ancl Wnnganiy. It will be remembered that several weeks ago I advisad you of this, and that it wa=i indignantly denied by the mayor of Wanganui and others.. Nevertheless, the information I supplied you-with-at the. tixTie was absolutely accurate, and for. some weeks part vigorous efforts have been made to destroy the mis in that district, . I understand that Mr Gilruth has. preserved somo of the dead guinea pigs inoculated -from the Auckland case, and also some of the 'cultures, and is quite willing to submit (hem to blip-Pasteur Institute in Paris, aiid -the highest'authorities in England. Tlisro .er.n b.6 no doubt that plague germs havo found their war into the colony, and though' there i.3: no excuse for alarm, there is every reason for a strict observation of all sanitary laws-and the destruction of as many rats as possible.
